An Extraordinary Childhood
Part oneMiraculous does not only describe the Prophet's (pbuh) entire life, but it started before his cradle too. His birth coincided with the year when Abraha, an Abyssinian subject who was ruling Yemen at the time, headed with an army for Makkah which was a religious center then. He wanted to destroy the Ka’abah but by the time he reached it, God sent birds with stones in their claws that showered Abraha's army till death (see the Qur’anic Chapter, The Elephant). The Prophet (pbuh) was born in Makkah to a father who died even before his birth and a mother who died when he was only six years old. Those years were fraught with both tragedy and miracles. Following his birth, the infant (pbuh) was taken to a nearby tribe; Bani Sa'd, for breast-feeding. His years there are reported (ibid) to have seen an astounding incident when Gabriel came to the four-year-old child, cleaved his chest, washed his heart in a golden vessel filled with water from the Zamzam spring and purified the heart from Satan's share (Hadith no. 236, "Sahih Muslim") The news was immediately related to the family that took the child. Thus, from the foster-mother's house to his mother's, who died soon after. He moved in with his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, who believed the child was special and blessed. In his sittings, the grandfather made a special place for Muhammad (pbuh) never touched by anybody else. Another tragedy, struck as his grandfather died when the child (pbuh) reached eight years and was relocated to his uncle, Abu Talib’s house. Abu Talib took him later on one of his travels to the Levant (ibid). On his journey with the 12-year-old boy (pbuh), the uncle passed by a Jewish ascetic who informed them that the child would be a God-chosen person, a mercy for all the worlds, and the seal of all prophets.
Part two
The tradition is explicit on the point that Haleemah’s return journey and her subsequent life, as long as the Prophet stayed with her, was encircled with a halo of good fortune. The donkey that she rode when she came to Makkah was lean and almost foundered; it recovered speed much to the amazement of Haleemah’s fellow travellers. By the time they reached the encampments in the country of the clan of Sa‘d, they found the scales of fortune turned in their favour. The barren land sprouted forth luxuriant grass and beasts came back to them satisfied and full of milk. Muhammad stayed with Haleemah for two years until he was weaned as Haleemah said: We then took him back to his mother requesting her earnestly to have him stay with us and benefit by the good fortune and blessings he had brought us. We persisted in our request which we substantiated by our anxiety over the child catching a certain infection peculiar to Makkah. At last, we were granted our wish and the Prophet stayed with us until he was four or five years of age. When, as related by Anas in Sahih Muslim, Gabriel came down and ripped his chest open and took out the heart. He then extracted a blood-clot out of it and said:
They all rushed towards him and found him all right only his face was white.
